Senegal international Ibrahim Mbaye made history on Saturday night after setting a new record during his team’s 3–1 victory over Sudan in the Round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Morocco.

The match was played at the Grand Stade de Tanger.

Mbaye scored Senegal’s third goal in the 77th minute, just three minutes after coming on as a substitute for Ismaila Sarr, sealing qualification for the Teranga Lions.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Mbaye became the youngest player to score at the Africa Cup of Nations in the 21st century, at the age of 17 years and 344 days.

Sudan had taken an early lead in the match through Amer Abdullah in the sixth minute with a fine strike past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The goal marked a historic moment, as Abdullah became the first Sudanese player to score in the knockout stages of the tournament since 1970.

Senegal responded strongly, with Bab Gaye leveling the score in the 29th minute before adding a second goal deep into first-half stoppage time (45+3).

Mbaye’s late goal completed the comeback and confirmed Senegal’s place in the quarterfinals.
