A massive explosion hit al-Sadr City, east of Baghdad, on Monday evening, killing at least 20 people and injuring dozens.
A security source told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that an explosive device exploded at the Al-Wahilat market, Sadr City.
"It has not yet been possible to confirm the casualties or the death of citizens," the source concluded.
Reports claim that most of the victims are women and children, noting that the death toll may rise.
The Iraqi authorities rushed immediately to the scene along with teams from the Civil Defense to extinguish any fire left from the blast, according to local sources.
On his part, spokesman for the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasool, declared an order from the Commander in Chief to deposit an arrest warrant against the backdrop of the explosion.
"The incident led to opening an investigation by the Baghdad Operations Command to figure out who is behind this horrific attack," Rasool added in a tweet.
