At least 16 people were killed on Tuesday when a bus plunged off a mountainous road in the Ayacucho region of Peru, according to local authorities.
The bus, which was carrying over 40 passengers, was traveling through the Andes Mountains, an area notorious for similar accidents.
Ayacucho official Weber Vega reported that 13 bodies have been recovered, with three more still trapped beneath the bus.
The total death toll stands at 16. Vega noted that adverse weather conditions have hindered the recovery efforts.
The Peruvian Ministry of Health released a statement confirming the incident, which occurred early Tuesday morning.
The bus was en route from Lima to the city of Ayacucho along the winding Libertador Highway when the accident happened.
This tragic event underscores the ongoing issues with road safety in Peru's mountainous regions, where challenging terrain and unpredictable weather often contribute to fatal accidents.
