Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa addressed the parliament on Thursday, revealing that heavy rains in East Africa over the past few weeks have claimed the lives of at least 155 people and destroyed over 10,000 homes in the country alone.

He stated that a total of 200,000 individuals have been affected by the rains. This calamity coincided with the global climate phenomenon known as La Niña, coinciding with the onset of the regional rainy season at the end of last month.

The continuous downpours have been particularly intense in areas where rainfall is rare.

Tanzania, located in East Africa, experiences seasonal rains, but the recent deluge has been unprecedented, leading to widespread devastation across the country.

La Niña, characterized by cooler sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, often brings increased rainfall to East Africa.

The resulting floods have displaced thousands of people and caused extensive damage to infrastructure and agriculture.

The Tanzanian government is grappling with the aftermath, providing aid and relief efforts to those affected by the natural disaster.
