An Iraqi soldier was killed and two others injured in an ISIS attack on a military checkpoint near Kirkuk, about 250 kilometers north of Baghdad, security sources reported on Wednesday.
According to the German news agency DPA, the attack took place in the evening when ISIS militants targeted an army security post in the village of Alaa Mahmoud, part of the Dibis district north of Kirkuk. The assault resulted in the death of one soldier and injuries to two others.
Following the attack, Iraqi army forces launched an immediate search operation to track down the assailants, leading to a firefight between the military and the attackers.
This incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by ISIS in Iraq, despite the group's territorial defeat in 2017. Militants continue to operate in remote areas, carrying out sporadic attacks on security forces and civilians.
The persistence of such violence underscores the need for continued vigilance and counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
