In a devastating incident on Chicago's South Side Saturday night, a young girl lost her life, and ten others sustained injuries in what police believe to be a gang-related shooting.
The tragedy unfolded near the intersection of 52nd St. and South Damen Ave. at nearly 9:18 p.m., as gunfire erupted, striking multiple victims. Among them, a girl tragically succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head, while two young boys, aged 1 and 7, sustained critical injuries from multiple gunshots.
Initially identified by police as an 8-year-old, the girl's father later clarified to Telemundo and via social media that she was, in fact, 9 years old.
Deputy Police Chief Don Jerome commended the swift response efforts of law enforcement in aiding the other eight victims, whose ages ranged from 19 to 40, by administering tourniquets and chest seals.
According to reports, the victims were gathered outside for a family event when the shooting occurred. A witness observed a black sedan approaching the scene before shots were fired into the crowd. All injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby hospitals by the Chicago Fire Department.
Deputy Chief Jerome emphasized that this was not a random act of violence but likely gang-related. He condemned the perpetrators' actions, stressing the tragic toll on innocent children, one of whom lost her life.
Area One detectives are actively investigating the incident, and as of now, no arrests have been made.
