A fast-moving wildfire in the US state of New Jersey has triggered evacuations and led to the closure of a major highway, according to local reports.

The fire, which broke out near the towns of Barnegat and Lacey, prompted emergency measures as it rapidly spread through the area.

One of the state's busiest highways, the Garden State Parkway, was shut down between Barnegat and Lacey due to the advancing flames.

Officials reported that over 1,300 buildings are under threat, with power outages affecting large portions of Barnegat.

Authorities issued a mandatory evacuation order for an unspecified number of buildings in Lacey Township, and shelters have been opened in several locations to accommodate displaced residents.

Fire officials said the wildfire has scorched more than 11.9 square kilometers of land. No injuries have been reported so far, but emergency services remain on high alert as strong winds and dry conditions continue to fuel the blaze.
