On Monday, the Vatican announced that the voting to select the new Pope will begin on May 7.
In a statement issued today (Monday), the Vatican explained that the College of Cardinals made this decision during a meeting attended by 180 cardinals.
This gathering was the first meeting for the Cardinals after the funeral of Pope Francis.
It added that 133 cardinals will participate in the conclave to elect the new Pope (only those under the age of eighty), noting that Cardinal Pietro Parolin will preside over the election of Pope Francis’s successor "within the conclave."
It is worth noting that electing the new Pope requires a qualified two-thirds majority.
A runoff will be held between the two candidates who receive the most votes, and the final two candidates will not be allowed to cast votes.
