Three people were killed in a shooting in the city of Uppsala, located north of Sweden’s capital Stockholm, on Tuesday, according to a statement from local police.

Authorities confirmed the deaths shortly after reports emerged of gunfire in the city center. In its statement, the police said, “Three people have been confirmed dead following the shooting,” adding that a murder investigation has been launched.

Emergency services responded to multiple calls from residents who reported hearing gunshots in central Uppsala.

The police have since cordoned off a large area surrounding the scene and initiated several investigative procedures to determine the circumstances of the incident.

As of now, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

The incident adds to a concerning trend of rising gun violence in parts of Sweden, prompting renewed discussions about public safety and law enforcement measures.
