Argentina national team head coach Lionel Scaloni has stated that Lionel Messi alone holds the right to decide when to retire from international football, emphasizing that the team and its supporters will continue to cherish his presence for as long as he remains active.

Messi, who will turn 39 years old in the summer of 2026, is widely expected to participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, which is likely to mark the final chapter of his illustrious international career.

One of Argentina’s forthcoming World Cup qualifiers, notably the fixture against Venezuela, may be among his last appearances on home soil in national colours.

"Messi continues to make a difference, that is simply the truth," Scaloni told reporters during a press conference. "He has earned the right to decide when to retire. Until then, we must appreciate and enjoy having him with us."

Performance Above All: Scaloni Speaks on Rodrigo De Paul

In the same media briefing, Scaloni also commented on Rodrigo De Paul, who recently joined Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), reaffirming that selection decisions are based on performance, not the level or location of a player's club.

"If he maintains his current level, Rodrigo will remain in the squad," Scaloni said. "We are fully aware of his dedication, his training habits, and the way he looks after himself."

Both Messi and De Paul featured in the 2025 Leagues Cup Final, which Inter Miami lost. Nevertheless, they remain integral members of the Argentina national team. Meanwhile, reports continue to circulate regarding a potential contract extension for Messi in Miami, which could see him remain in Florida through the World Cup.

Lionel Messi, winner of a record eight Ballon d'Or awards, has compiled a remarkable international record: 193 appearances for Argentina and 112 international goals

As speculation mounts over his retirement, Scaloni’s remarks serve as a reminder to both fans and the footballing world to savour the final moments of one of the greatest players in the sport’s history.
