Players of the Nigerian national team reportedly threatened on Wednesday not to travel to Marrakech on Thursday for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match against Algeria.
The threat comes in protest over delayed player bonuses, a recurring issue that has affected the “Super Eagles” in previous tournaments.
According to reports, frustration among both players and coaching staff has grown, prompting the threat to boycott the trip unless outstanding payments are settled.
Journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, formerly with the BBC, confirmed that the bonuses for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations have not yet been paid.
He noted on X that the unpaid rewards include match victory bonuses from Nigeria’s four group-stage wins over Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique.
Okeleji also reported that the players have skipped recent training sessions while awaiting a resolution to the dispute.
Nigeria is set to face Algeria in the quarter-finals in Marrakech on Saturday, following a strong campaign in which they won all their group-stage matches and defeated Mozambique 4-0 in the Round of 16.
This is not the first time such a dispute has affected the team. Players previously boycotted a training session ahead of their November 2025 World Cup qualifier against Gabon, also held in Morocco.
