Al Ahly left it late to overcome a resilient Pharco side, with substitute Mohamed Sherif heading home deep in stoppage time to lead the Cairo giants to a 2-1 Egyptian Premier League win on Tuesday.
Sherif came to Ahly's rescue with a close-range effort seven minutes into the additional time as the team avoided what would have been a second consecutive draw after they were held to a 1-1 stalemate by Future FC in their previous game.
It marked Sherif's second goal in seven league matches as he is confined to a bit-part role under coach Marcel Koller this season after his form had faded.
Winger Ahmed Abdel-Kader gave Ahly the lead on the half-hour mark after they missed a couple of goal-scoring chances but Ahmed Sherif brought Pharco level with a fine strike a few minutes later.
Ahly, who have 22 points, extended their lead on top to four points. However, defending champions Zamalek can trim the gap back to two points if they beat Haras El-Hodoud later in the day.
Pharco, who marked the debut of coach Ehab Galal with a defeat, lie 10th in the table with seven points from eight matches.
