Croatian coach Branko Ivankovic was appointed as the head coach of the Chinese men's national football team, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) said on Saturday.

CFA said in a statement: "In order to prepare for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the CFA decided, after the assessment of experts, to hire Branko Ivankovic as the new head coach of China's men's national team."

Ivankovic will succeed Serbian Aleksandar Jankovic, who had a disappointing run with the Chinese in the AFC Asian Cup.

The 69-year-old Ivankovic was the coach of Oman's national team since 2020.

He also headed several teams like Germany's Hannover 96 and Croatia's GNK Dinamo Zagreb, in addition to the national teams of Iran and Oman.

He also led China's Shandong Taishan to capture the Chinese Super League trophy in 2010
