Jordan’s Public Prosecutor at the Grand Criminal Court charged on Sunday 16 inpiduals involved in the Zarqa Crime with attempted premeditated murder.

They also face charges of kidnapping and causing permanent disability among other crimes, according to the Jordan’s Petra news agency.

The prosecutor ordered all defendants to be held for 15 days pending investigations into the crime which sparked a wide public outcry and calls for ensuring the perpetrators receive the maximum punishment enshrined in the law.

It is worth mentioning that, activists in Jordan circulated on social media a few days ago horrific videos, showing a 16-year-old boy with his hands cut and eyes bleeding against the background of “revenge” in the city of Zarqa.

The “Zarqa Crime” hashtag appeared on the Google search engine among the most searched topics besides the social networking site, while the Jordanian monarch, King Abdullah II, intervened, according to the official Kingdom TV.

“The King followed up on the details of the accurate security operation carried out by the Public Security Directorate – Police Command that led to the arrest of people who committed the crime,” The TV report added.

The King emphasized “the necessity to take harsh legal measures against criminals who commit crimes that terrify society,” directing those concerned to provide the necessary treatment for the boy.
