An official at the European Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a "potential and wider outbreak" of monkeypox at major festivals and events scheduled for this summer in Europe.

"The possibility of a larger outbreak of the disease in Europe and elsewhere during the summer is high," said Hans Kluge, WHO's regional director for Europe.

He pointed out that investigations into cases so far indicate that the outbreak in Europe dates back to mid-April.

This is the largest and most widespread outbreak of the virus recorded outside West and Central Africa, where monkeypox is endemic.

Kluge explained that the rapid transmission of "monkeypox" has worsened with the lifting of restrictions to combat the Coronavirus  (known also as COVID-19)in most parts of Europe during the past months. He emphasized that the virus can infect anyone.

Kluge stated that since the virus did not spread through the same pathways as the "COVID-19" disease, there is no need for the extensive public health measures that have been imposed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
