What to Know Before Watching Ramy Youssef’s “Ramy”

Egyptian-American actor Ramy Youssef won a Golden Globe Award for best actor in a comedy series, on January 5.

Youssef received the award for his role in Hulu comedy “Ramy,” which he also created, wrote, produced and directed, at the 77th annual Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

The Golden Globe Awards was hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais, who poked fun at the Hollywood elite.

Youssef won after a tough competition, against iconic actor Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Ben Platt (“The Politician”) and Paul Rudd (“Living With Yourself”).

The show is a Hulu production that was premiered on April 19, 2019, co-starring Ramy Youssef as Ramy Hassan, Amr Waked as Farouk Hassan,  Dave Merheje as Ahmed, Stephen Way as Stevie, Hiam Abbass as Maysa Hassan.

It also stars May Calamawy as Dena Hassan, Laith Nakli as Uncle Naseem, Poorna Jagannathan as Salma, Rosaline Elbay as Amani, Shadi Alfons as Shadi, and Kate Miller as Vivian.

  • The plot

The series revolves around Ramy, the son of Egyptian immigrants, who lives in New Jersey neighborhood. He is on a spiritually conflicting journey between his Muslim community, his millennial friends, and God.

  • The Directors 

The series first episode was directed by Youssef, Jehane Noujaim, and Harry Bradbeer.

Meanwhile, the show's third episode was directed by Christopher Storer, and the fourth by Cherien Dabis.

  • The writers

The series first episode was written by Leah Nanako Winkler, Sahar Jahani, Bridget Bedard, and Minhal Baig.

Meanwhile, the show's sixth episode was written by Ryan Welch, and Ari Katcher, while the seventh was written by Youssef.

It was reported on April 18, 2018, that Hulu had given the production a series order for the first season.

On February 11, 2019, it was announced that the series would premiere on April 19. It was later announced on May 1, that Hulu renewed the series for a second season.

The series held its world premiere at the  Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas, as a part of the festival's screenings of the "Episodic Premieres" series.

Ramy received Ramy 8/10 from IMDb, 97% from Rotten Tomatoes, 87% from TV Guide, while  93% of Google users liked the show,
