Liverpool FC announced on Sunday that their Dutch defender, Virgil van Dijk, will undergo surgery on the knee injury he sustained during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Everton.

The center-back was injured during the first half of the Reds clash with Blues in the fifth round of the Premier League after a strong interference from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The Dutch star was required to be substituted and further assessment on the injury has revealed that an operation will be needed.

The English club said in a statement that "No specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage."

"Following surgery, Van Dijk will begin a rehabilitation program with the club’s medical team to enable him to reach full fitness as soon as possible." the club added.
