NBC News, citing local authorities, reported that 6 people died as a result of a major car pileup, which occurred due to a dust storm in the US state of Montana.

According to Montana Highway Patrol official Jay Nelson, a fatal collision of 21 vehicles occurred on Interstate 90 near the southeastern Montana city of Hardin.

Nelson told NBC that a fast-appearing wind storm caused a 21-vehicle crash this evening.

Officials said 6 people died as a result of the accident, but there was no information on any possible injuries.

“Everything is indicating there was an isolated weather event that caused near-blackout conditions at this location,” Nelson said, noting that the windstorm in the area with extremely high winds is the preliminary cause of the incident.

The crash, which occurred around 4:30 p.m., shut down traffic on Interstate 90 as the highway patrol investigated. As of about 9 p.m., the eastbound lanes were still closed, and officials were perting traffic.

On Friday, Greg Gianforte, the Governor of Montana wrote on Twitter that he was “deeply saddened by the news of a mass casualty crash near Hardin.”

“Please join me in prayer to lift up the victims and their loved ones,” he said. “We’re grateful to our first responders for their service.”
