The United Nations announced that it has sent 32 tons of emergency aid to Khartoum to support thousands of refugees fleeing the fighting in neighbouring Ethiopia.

On Friday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said that a second shipment is supposed to arrive by air from Dubai, on Monday, while more than 43,000 refugees have crossed the border so far.

The number of displaced Ethiopians may reach 200,000 during the next six months, according to humanitarian organizations.

The fighting between the central government and the Tigray Liberation Front forced thousands to flee to other regions in Ethiopia or cross the border into neighbouring Sudan.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees visited Khartoum to oversee aid arrivals.

He declared, "I want to express my solidarity and thanks to Sudan for opening its borders to Ethiopians."

The spokesperson for the High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva confirmed that half of the refugees were children.

The aid that arrived on Friday included 5,000 blankets, 4,500 solar lamps, 2,900 mosquito nets, 200 waterproof sheets and 200 plastic sheets.

Monday's trip is supposed to carry 1,275 tents and 10 pre-built warehouses, sufficient to house 16,000 people.
