UN Secretary-General Hails Sisi’s Presidency of AU

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi met earlier today Thursday United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres, on the sidelines of The 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7), according to Presidency spokesman Bassam Radi.

Sisi stressed Egypt's aspiration to continue cooperation and coordination with the United Nations (UN) to enhance its essential role in addressing the priority issues of developing countries, as well as financing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

 

In addition, the Egyptian president stressed that deepening the strategic partnership between UN and AU tops Egypt’s priorities during its current presidency of AU.

On his part, UN Secretary General praised Egypt's distinguished position in the international business system, expressing appreciation for the long-standing cooperation between Egypt and UN as well as the active participation of Egypt in the various activities of the organization.

 

Guterres also hailed Sisi's successful efforts, in the light of his current presidency of AU, as well as Egypt’s pivotal role in Africa and Middle East region.

Moreover, the meeting tackled a number of key regional and international issues. In this regard, they agreed to continued coordination between Egypt and UN regarding latest developments in Libya and Syria.

The UN official also reviewed the efforts exerted by the UN to reach political solutions for these issues.

Additionally, he expressed UN’s keenness to strengthen and support cooperation with Egypt, in order to establish the foundations of peace, stability and development at the regional level.

Noteworthy, Sisi and Abe co-chaired the inaugural session of TICAD 7 that kicked off later today Wednesday 28/8/2019.

Egypt is taking part in the conference as the current chairman of the African Union.

(TICAD 7) is currently being held in Yokohama city, Japan, under the theme “Advancing Africa’s Development through People, Technology and Innovation”.

It plays a major role in facilitating and promoting high-level political dialogue between African leaders and development partners on issues related to economic growth, trade and investment, sustainable development, human security, peace and stability.

About 40 African countries took part in this event including: Egypt, Cameron, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Chad, South Africa, Algeria and others.
