The United Nations (UN) announced Friday that the economic crisis that Sri Lanka is currently witnessing, which is the worst since its independence in 1948, has led to an increase in the severity of the hunger crisis throughout the country.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOOHA) in Geneva issued an urgent appeal for donations, indicating that $47 million is needed to be raised.

It is noteworthy that Sri Lanka once came a long way on the road to development for 10 years.

This Asian state did not need any humanitarian aid from the UN, but after a ban on imports of chemical fertilizers was imposed last year, the harvest is now only half of what it was, he said.
