Ukraine's ambassador to the United States, Oksana Makarova, said in an interview with the Ukrainian service of Radio Liberty (recognised as a foreign agent in Russia) that was uploaded to its website on Saturday that the two countries are in talks about the possibility of military aid originally intended for Afghanistan being redirected to Kiev.

"We are actively working on this. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba discussed this issue during his visit. An active discussion is going on," Makarova said when asked if Kiev might count on military aid that was meant for Afghanistan.

Makarova emphasised that the question was not what Kiev would gain in this situation, but rather what the Ukrainian side believes is required.

She noted that Kiev and Washington had inked a five-year deal earlier this year that would allow the two countries to collaborate on a "higher strategic level."

In addition, the ambassador stated that Ukraine would like the US aid list to be increased.

US President Joe Biden signed the $770 billion defence budget for 2022 at the end of December 2021. Ukraine will receive $300 million in aid. A further $150 million will be allocated to "security cooperation with Baltic countries."
