The UK on Wednesday pledged an extra 286 million pounds to Afghanistan, a day ahead of an international conference co-hosted with the UN to seek more than $4 billion

“The new UK funding will be channeled through UN partners and trusted NGOs. No funding will go directly to the Taliban,” Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said.

The UK had previously provided 286 million pounds to Afghanistan in the 2021-2022 financial year, which means that London decided to contribute the same amount again this year.

Liz stated that Britain will pledge during the conference to put the girls’ education in Afghanistan at the top of its priority. It will demand the Taliban reverse its decision to prevent girls to attend secondary schools.

the United Nations announced in January that it needed $4.4 billion from the donor countries to fund Afghanistan with humanitarian aid this year, its largest ever appeal for a single country.
