WASHINGTON, Sept 26 (SEE)- Uber agreed to pay a record fine of $ 148 million to settle charges over 2016 data breach.

New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood said in a statement on Wednesday that the names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers of 57 million users and drivers were leaked in 2016 in all US states including Washington, D.C.

Underwood called on the company to adopt a data breach notification form, an Employee Safety Program, and to employ an independent third party to protect its data.

She noted that clients deserve to know that their personal information will be protected. "We do not tolerate absolutely those who violate the law and leave consumer and employee information vulnerable to exploitation," she added.

In November 2016, Uber found out that its user data has been hacked. The company paid $ 100,000 to force hackers to erase stolen information rather than notifying clients.
