The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that its Development Cooperation Agency has donated €300,000 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in the Philippines, following Typhoon Rai.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council (NDRRMC) in the Philippines has reported that the death toll from Typhoon Rai that swept the country has risen to 407.

The council said that 82 are still missing.

Typhoon Rai, which has become one of the most powerful typhoons in the country’s modern history, reached the coast of the Philippines on December 16, causing mudslides and floods.

The authorities evacuated more than 300,000 people from the affected areas. The typhoon was accompanied by strong winds.

The local newspaper, the Philippine Star, reported that the typhoon caused more than 300,000 people to flee their homes and beachfront resorts, as Rai destroyed parts of the Visayas and Mindanao regions, and caused communications and electricity interruptions in many areas.

The United States of America donated 50 million pesos ($990,658) to support people affected by Typhoon Rai in the Philippines.

“The United States is pleased to provide this additional assistance to support the immediate needs of inpiduals and families in the areas hit by Typhoon Odette,” said U.S. Embassy in the Philippines Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Heather Variava. “This support will help ensure that food and other life-saving supplies reach communities most in need.

“In partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the new funding from [the US Agency for International Development] will provide logistics and emergency telecommunications support in typhoon-affected areas,” the US Embassy in the Philippines said in a statement.
