Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan officially announced on Sunday that the date for conducting the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for June will be brought forward to May 14.

Erdogan had said last Wednesday that he wanted to hold elections on that day, but the official announcement came on Sunday during a meeting with young voters in Bursa, western Turkey, according to the official Turkish news agency Anadolu.

The election is seen as a test for Erdogan, who has been in power for 20 years. He was elected prime minister in 2003, then president in 2014.

Opinion polls indicate that Erdogan's re-election is not certain for the presidency.

As president, he has the right to call early elections.

It is noteworthy that May 14 is the date that coincides with the anniversary of the first free and fair elections held in Turkey in 1950, when the nascent Democratic Party, led by Adnan Menderes, defeated the Republican People's Party (Ataturk's Party) in a landslide victory.
