Tunisia’s President Says Detaining of Al Qarawy Challenges Credibility of Presidential Election

The Interim President of Tunisia Mohamed El Nasser said that the presidential election in Tunisia is decisive to that country.

He pointed out that the local and international observers follow this  election attentively.

El Nasser mentioned  that  events of the first round of the presidential election   has resulted winning of Qais Said and Nabil El Qarawy.

The later is still behind bar  for charges related to corruption, so he could not lead his campaign.

The Tunisian President warns that imprisoning of Al Qarawy is an  abnormal situation.

He affirmed that he has phoned Chairman of the Higher Council of Judges to find a solution to surmount the standing difficulties.

The acting president stressed that detention of Al Qarawy  hurts credibility of the upcoming election and destroys image of Tunisia abroad.

He further added that he strives to keep judges independent as a safeguard to separation of powers.

He assured that principle should be kept strictly.

On the other hand, Head of the Higher Authority for Election in Tunisia, said that has contacted senior officials to secure conditions for Al Qarawy to lead a campaign in normal conditions.

El Nasser urges media outlets to surpass discourse of enticing and agaitating.

He affirmed that the presidency should do its best to push democracy toward success.

It is worth to mention that Bu Rawwy Al Imam, Director of Information and Communication Office  at Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tunisia, said that the Tunisian embassies across the world have completed preparations to receive voters in   legislative election which kicked off on Friday.

The upcoming elections run throughout days from Friday to Sunday.

Tunisia’s Appeal Court on Tuesday refused to consider a petition to release Al Qarawi, a presidential candidate who came second in the first round days before. He was detained for accusations of money laundering.

Judges of the Appeal Court considered the petition on Tuesday instead of Wednesday as it had been appointed.

Sources revealed that Al Qarawi, chairman of Qalb Tunis– heart of Tunisia, is accused of laundering money and tax evasion.

A non-government organization called “ Ana Yaqez- I’m Vigilant “ has filed a complaint at the Tunisian Prosecution against Al Qarawy in 2017.

A judge decided to arrest him in August just ten days ahead of the presidential campaign  launching.

The Independent High Authority for Elections in Tunisia, chaired by Nabil Baffon, has announced that the second round will be on Sunday,  October 13.

He affirmed readiness of the concerned bodies in Tunisia to secure the polling stations on the day of the presidential election.
