Tunisia's Ahmed Hafnaoui claimed the Olympic swimming gold medal in the men's 400m freestyle on Sunday in a time of 3:43.36.

Hafnaoui became the first Arabic athlete to achieve a gold medal in this edition, currently being held in Japan. Australia's Jack McLoughlin won the silver in 3:43.52 and American Kieran Smith took bronze in 3:43.94.

``I believe when I touched the wall and I saw myself first,'' he said. ``I was so surprised." ``When I hit the water, I was just thinking about the medal, not the time,'' Hafnaoui added.

"I just can't believe that, it's amazing. I felt better in the water this morning than yesterday and that's it. I'm the Olympic champion now," he said. "I just put my head in the water and that's it. I just can't believe it. It's a dream come true."
