On Thursday, Tunisia’s parliament speaker has hardly won a no-confidence vote, after only 97 MPs voted against the Islamist Ennahda party leader Rached Ghannouchi, falling short of the 109 needed to oust him.

Ghannouchi’s narrow victory will result in a more fierce opposition in parliament from parties that voted against him, potentially complicating efforts to agree on a new government.

The vote comes two weeks after Tunisia’s government collapsed less than five months into its term following corruption allegations against the prime minister, which he denied.

Both the confidence vote in Ghannouchi and the collapse of the short-lived government stem from an election last year that produced a deeply fragmented parliament in which Ennahda, as the biggest party, won only a quarter of the seats.

Tunisia's challenges

The political crisis has come at a difficult moment for Tunisia, especially the global pandemic that has crashed the economy just as the government was seeking to agree on reforms aimed at reducing public debt while boosting growth and creating jobs

On July 25 , Tunisian President Kais Saied has tasked interior minister Hichem Mechichi to form the country’s next government.

He has a 30-day period to form the new government and earn the parliament’s vote of confidence ,or the president will dissolve parliament and call for another election with urgent economic decisions hanging over Tunisia.

On July 15th, the Tunisian President demanded former Prime Minister Elyes Fakhfakh and his cabinet to submit their resignations, according to “Sky News Arabia”.
