On Wednesday, the Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi held a telephone conversation with his US counterpart Donald Trump to discuss the crisis in Libya and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) file.

In a statement, the official spokesman for the Egyptian presidency, Bassam Rady, said that the two presidents exchanged views over the current situation in Libya in light of the new peace initiative for ceasefire in the North African country.

Trump welcomed Egypt's proposal for a ceasefire in Libya, noting that it aims to achieve a political settlement to the crisis there, end the escalating hostilities between the two Libyan warring parties and enforce the will of the Libyan people in achieving security and stability for their country.

The phone talks also tackled enhancing strategic bilateral relations between the two countries, in addition to the latest developments on the GERD file and the relevant tripartite negotiations.

Egypt called for a ceasefire starting on Monday, as part of an initiative which also proposed an elected leadership council for Libya.

Earlier on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomed the resumption of talks led by the United Nations between Libya's warring sides and urged speedy negotiations to achieve a ceasefire.

"The agreement between the GNA and LNA to re-enter UN security talks was a good first step, very positive," Pompeo said in a news conference, referring to the Government of National Accord and Libyan National Army, led by eastern-based commander Khalifa Haftar.

"Quick and good-faith negotiations are now required to implement a ceasefire and relaunch the UN-led intra-Libyan political talks," Pompeo said.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on June 2 said Libya's warring parties had agreed to restart ceasefire talks.

Notably, President El-Sisi announced on Saturday an initiative for a political settlement in Libya following his talks in Cairo with Haftar.

Cairo Declaration, the Egyptian initiative announced by Sisi, seeks ceasefire between warring Libyan parties starting from June 8, a UN-supervised election of a Libyan presidential council and drafting a constitutional declaration to regulate elections for the later stage.

The announcement was made in a joint press conference following his meeting with Haftar and the Libyan parliament speaker Aguila Saleh.
