Transport Minister: Egypt to Build Railway Network to Sudan, Libya

Kamel Al-Wazir, Minister of Transport, confirmed Sunday that the political leadership and the Egyptian government are paying unprecedented attention to the transport sector, as it is the main artery on which economic and social development programs have been adopted.

He added that the Ministry of Transport is currently implementing a comprehensive plan to develop and modernize the components of the transport system, including means and networks in sectors roads, bridges, railways, subways, and electric traction, as well as seaports, river, land and dry ports, and logistical centers, in addition to digital transformation projects in all related sectors.

Wazir noted, during a press conference, that the Ministry of Transport’s plan includes supporting all types of transportation industries, especially modern, advanced and environmentally friendly ones.

He stressed that the construction of the Monorail, the Administrative Capital, and the Monorail of October 6, with a total length of 98.5 km, and the construction of the express electric train from Sokhna to New Alamein, with a length of 438.5 km, is underway.

The minister pointed out the plans to extend the railway network to reach Sudan and Libya as well, adding: “We are planning to construct the Marsa Matrouh railway - the port of Jarjoub... and the construction of the Marsa Matrouh-Siwa line and the extension of the Matrouh-Salloum line to the city of Bani Ghazi in Libya.”

Moreover, he affirmed that the railway is expected to connect between West Port Said port to Abu Qir port in Alexandria via Damietta and New Mansoura.
