In a poll that the opposition has described as fake, Tanzania's President John Magufuli won re-election with a landslide victory.

The key rival of Mr. Magufuli, Tundu Lissu, said agents of his party were barred from entering polling stations during the election on Wednesday.

Claims of fraud were rejected by the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

The NEC said the president took 84 percent of the vote in its final results, while Mr. Lissu got 13 percent.

On Friday, an East African Group observer mission said that the election was "conducted in a normal manner."

Mr. Lissu, who was the Chadema candidate, said on Thursday he would not recognize the results saying that the vote was" not an election by both Tanzanian and international laws. It was just a gang of people who just wanted to exploit state machinery to cling to power."

He alleged that when his party members were not present, ballot boxes were tampered with.
