Riyadh Embraces 40th session of GCC Summit

The activities of the 40th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit is set to kick off later today Tuesday in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, under the chairmanship of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

The city has previously hosted the summit on eight occasions.

GCC Agenda

The summit brings together leaders of GCC states to discuss ways to boost cooperation and integration among them in various political, defense, security, economic and social fields.

Moreover, they will also tackle key political, regional, and international issues as well as the security situation in the region and its impact on the security and safety of the GCC members.

GCC Preparatory Meetings

GCC foreign ministers arrived on Monday in Riyadh to participate in the ministerial meeting of the council, before holding further preparatory sessions.

The meetings were headed by UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash, with the participation of GCC Secretary-General Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani.

GCC 

GCC is a regional intergovernmental political and economic union consisting of all Arab states of the Persian Gulf except Iraq, namely: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The charter of the GCC was signed on 25 May 1981, formally establishing the institution.

It is composed of the heads of the member states. It is the highest decision-making entity of the GCC, setting its vision and goals.

Decisions on substantive issues require unanimous approval, while issues on procedural matters require a majority.

Each member of the organization has one vote.
