Sudan's FM, Chinese Counterpart Discuss GERD

Sudanese Foreign Minister (FM) Mariam Al-Sadek Al-Mahdi, her Chinese counterpart discussed on Sunday Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) file developments over the phone. 

"I had a phone conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. We discussed bilateral relations between both countries as well as cooperation in various fields," Al-Mahdi posted on Twitter.

"We also discussed GERD's latest development, underlining the need to reach a solution via negotiations," Sudanese FM added.

On Saturday, Sudan’s Sovereign Council chief Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan met U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman in Khartoum.

At the outset of the meeting, Burhan reviewed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam’s (GERD) latest developments, stressing Sudan’s firm position that negotiations are the best way to solve the crisis and differences among the upstream and downstream countries.

He also underlined the necessity to reach a legally binding agreement among Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia on the operation and filling of GERD.

Moreover, Burhan praised the advanced level of Sudanese-American ties and the American positions in support of the transitional government.

U.S. congressional delegation discussed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis during its recent visit to Khartoum, Sudan.

In a press conference following official talks, the U.S. delegation stressed that the GERD crisis must be solved peacefully through dialogue and negotiations.

Moreover, the delegation pledged their country’s support for the transition to democracy in Sudan and to help the country reintegrate into the international financial and monetary systems.
