Sudan's Foreign Minister (FM) Dr. Mariam Al Sadiq Al Mahdi expressed hope that United States (US) would exercise more political and diplomatic pressure on Ethiopia, according to the Sudanese news agency "SUNA".

This came during the symposium of the graduates of the American University in Cairo –Jordan which hosted the Minister virtually Saturday.

Moreover, the Minister stressed that Sudan is looking forward to reaching a binding legal deal on filling and operation before the second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Al-Mahdi also noted that this vision gained a great national consensus between the components of the transitional government and the Sudanese people as well as regional and international understanding of the reasonableness and objectivity of the proposal.

In addition, the Sudanese minister said that Khartoum is ready to negotiate in order to resolve the issue via peaceful means and under the auspices of the African Union (AU), reiterating welcome to the role of international partners as guarantors and facilitators.

It is worth mentioning that, The Sudanese FM said that the second filling of the (GERD) without a legal agreement is a real threat to Sudan.

This came during her meeting a week ago with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo Addo, during her visit to the capital, Accra, as part of her second African tour to explain Sudan’s position on the development of the controversial dam.

Al-Mahdi affirmed her country’s position in finding a peaceful solution to the dispute over the dam and borders with neighboring Ethiopia, adding that “Sudan is keen on the stability of the region and its reference is to international law and common treaties.”

She indicated that Sudan adopts African solutions to the problems on the African continent with a greater role for the international community, stressing that “the second filling of the dam without a legal agreement represents a real threat to Sudan.”
