Water Spiders and Fire Ants inspire a team of US scientists to invent a water proof metal frame so it could be used to construct unsinkable ship.

The newly invented metal frame won’t sink; even if it has deep pores so it could be used in many applications.

Red and brown fire ant can still float alive for weeks until it finds land to embark on it.

On the other hand, water spider spends the whole life in water of rivers and, puddles and  ponds.

It comes on the surface only to inhale air.

Researchers of Rochester University in the USA notice that those two insects can still alive for a long time under or over water surface  by holding the air in an enclosed area.

Water spider knits a dome-like net known as “ping bell” under water surface.

The net is filled with air taken from the surface by capillaries on its belly and legs and kept it there.

Also fire ant can form a ferry by holding air through its body.

The researchers imitate the natural abilities of both fire ant and water spider.

They produced a multi-layer frame that can hold a huge volume of air.

Dr. Chun Lee Ju, Professor of Optics at Rochester University and leader of the team, said that they used a pilot technique developed in laboratories.

It uses laser intensified ray to engrave surface of metals to hold air and make those surfaces expel air out.

The engraved surfaces patted by two surfaces of aluminum to hold air behind them.

The researchers immersed the metal frame under water for two months.

It springs to the surface again after removing the weight keeps it under water.

The metal frame keeps that property even after piercing it many times later.

It is worth mentioning that the developed countries prefer using ships to convey their trade with the outer world.

Maritime transpiration is cheaper as it compared to other means.
