Sotheby's to Exhibit Nelson Shanks' Collection for Auction

Sotheby's will launch a new major auction on January 27 under the theme of Master to Master: Nelson Shanks Collection.

Hundreds of sculptures, paintings, pieces of furniture, decorations will go under the hammer.

The prestigious auction house expressed in a statement: "Shanks was renowned for his collection of Old Master paintings, sculpture, drawings, furniture, and decorative arts, all of which are offered in this exceptional sale."

The artist established several activities in Pennsylvania such as studio, art school and home, so visitors can enjoy his unique items. The majority of them done by important Italian baroque artists.

Sothby's added: "Highlights from the sale include a monumental masterpiece by Neapolitan artist Mattia Preti, with provenance dating back to its commission, a rare mature work by Guido Cagnacci, and a magnificent Venus by Dosso Dossi, which was thought to be lost until Shanks recognized it and acquired it."

In addition, the collection will include several works of Shanks himself such as his paintings for Princess Diana, Luciano Pavarotti, Renée Fleming, and Presidents Reagan and Clinton.
