Sisi, Sri Lanka's counterpart discuss bilateral relations

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received, on Tuesday, a phone call from Gotabaya Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka, and discussed bilateral relations, according to Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.

The Sri Lankan president expressed his country's pride in the distinguished relations that bind it with Egypt, stressing the interest that Sri Lanka attaches to strengthening bilateral relations with Egypt in all fields. 

Moreover, Rajapaksa affirmed his country’s keenest to foster bilateral relations in various international forums, especially in light of the pioneering role that Egypt plays at the regional and international levels, and its role, most notably in the field of combating terrorism and achieving security, stability, and peace in the Middle East.

For his part, Sisi affirmed Egypt's welcome to intensify cooperation with Sri Lanka in various international forums, especially in light of the historical relations between the two countries, as well as Egypt's interest in strengthening the bonds of bilateral cooperation, especially at the economic level and joint investments.

“The contact also dealt with efforts to exchange experiences between the two countries in various fields, including combating the novel coronavirus, in addition to the fight against terrorism file as one of the most important challenges facing the two countries,” Rady added. 

In the same context, Rajapaksa commended Egypt’s efforts to combat terrorism at the domestic and regional levels and to confront extremist ideologies. He also lauded Al-Azhar's pioneering role in this regard, as it is the beacon of the Islamic world and the representative of true Islamic teachings.
