Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received a phone call on Wednesday from his South Sudanese counterpart Salva Kiir, according to presidency spokesman Ambassador Bassam Rady.

Over a phone call, Kiir expressed his appreciations towards Egypt's key role and sincere efforts to support stability in South Sudan, within the framework of Egypt's vital role at both the regional and continental levels.

Moreover, South Sudanese president valued the historic relations between both countries, stressing his country's keenness to enhance relations with Egypt in various fields during the coming period.

On his part, Sisi welcomed the recent deal between Kiir and the opposition leader Riek Machar to start forming the national unity government in implementation of the peace agreement decisions.

Egypt's head of state also referred to the deep and close relations that bring the two countries together, affirming Egypt's keenness to continue providing various forms of support to the brotherly country of South Sudan and its peace process.

In addition, both presidents exchanged views regarding various regional and international issues of common interests.

It is worth mentioning that, in July 2011, South Sudan declared independence in line with a January referendum that was the culmination of a 2005 peace deal ending decades of civil war with the north. In the same month, Egypt formally announced recognizing the country.

In May 2018, Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry accompanied South Salva Kiir, on behalf of the Egyptian president, in the inauguration session of the meeting of the National Liberation Council of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Juba.
