German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that repealing the constitutive law on joint relations between NATO and Russia would be a "mistake" because it would serve Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Addressing German lawmakers, Scholz added that the future relationship with Russia will play a major role in the new strategic concept of NATO.

"The truth is, we are far from negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, because Putin still believes in the possibility of a dictated peace," the German chancellor said, explaining that Germany will continue to supply Ukraine with all the weapons it needs.

"We will strengthen the capabilities of our army to be able to defend ourselves and our partners against all attacks," he stressed.

Last week, the German Chancellor condemned the “brutality” of Russia’s war against Ukraine, during his visit on Thursday to a suburb of Kyiv, which was devastated by the Russian attack.

Scholz described what happened as absurd violence, saying that innocent civilians were targeted and homes were destroyed, pointing out that an entire suburb that did not have any military structures was destroyed.

“This very much speaks about the brutality of the Russian attack, which aimed a destruction and conquest,” he said, highlighting that the destruction in Irpin is a “very important monument” that calls for something to be done.

He added that it is a horrific war, saying that Russia is making progress in it with the utmost brutality without regard for human life, and this is what must also end.

The German chancellor pledged international solidarity for Ukraine.
