Saudi Arabia: Lion Causes Panic in Streets of Riyadh

The Saudi Special Forces for Environmental Security (SFES) rescued a lion that was loose in a Riyadh neighborhood, and returned it to its shelter with no injuries reported.

SFES spokesman Raed Al-Maliki stated that the organization had received a report that a lion was found trapped in a pole in a residential neighborhood in Riyadh.

Al-Maliki said that the report was dealt with immediately, and in coordination with the National Center for Wildlife Development, the organization moved the lion to its shelter.

Al-Maliki said that the authorities are currently conducting an investigation with the aim of finding those responsible for this humiliating action.

"Such actions include a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 30 million Saudi riyals as stipulated in the environmental regulations, or one of these two penalties," he said.

He urged citizens to report any cases of import, export, transfer, sale, display of such wildlife animals.
