On Monday, Russia announced the expulsion of eight Greek diplomats over Athens's delivery of military equipment to Ukraine on which Moscow is launching an armed attack.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it had summoned the Greek ambassador to Moscow and handed him a note telling him that 8 Greek diplomats must least the country within 8 days.

This decision comes "as a direct result of the unfriendly measures taken by the Greek authorities," according to the ministry, which spoke of sending weapons and military equipment to Ukraine and the expulsion of Russian diplomats accredited to Greece.

In April, Greece decided to expel 12 Russian diplomats following Moscow's military operation in Ukraine.

Despite being a traditional ally of Russia, with centuries-old traditions and being Orthodox, Greece joined the voice of its Western allies and denounced the invasion of Ukraine.

Western countries have expelled hundreds of Russian diplomats in the past months, and Moscow has responded in kind.
