Russia is supporting China in warning U.S. President Joe Biden against "playing with fire" with regard to Washington’s stance on Taiwan, Kremlin Spokesman told reporters on Friday.

"Undoubtedly, we are in solidarity," Dmitry Peskov said. "We respect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and think that no country in the world should have the right to question [it] or undertake any steps of instigative or other nature."

Moreover, Peskov stressed that Washington’s attitude towards Taiwan could only cause further tension, with the world already strained by a multitude of regional and global problems. He noted: "Certainly, such steps can only be destructive."

On Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping had a candid talk with Biden and discussed Taiwan in a call that lasted more than two hours.

During their phone conversation, Xi told Biden that the U.S. is wrong to view China as a long-term challenge and warned Washington not to “play with fire” over Taiwan. He also stressed that the two sides should maintain communication at all levels and promote bilateral cooperation, Xinhua News Agency reported Xi as saying.

The talks came after Beijing warned of “strong measures” if U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi goes through with a possible visit to self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory.
