Benjamin de Rothschild, chairman of the private French-Swiss bank died of a heart attack at the age of 57.

De Rothschild had already pulled out of running the business that his father Edmund founded in 1953, leaving it in the hands of his wife, Ariane, while pursuing his passion for fast yachting.

He has managed assets worth 173 billion Swiss francs, and employed over 2,600 in 32 locations worldwide.

Deputy CEO Cynthia Tobiano said the business of Edmund de Rothschild would not be affected by Benjamin's sudden death.

"COVID-19 is a catalyst for moving forward and digitizing faster," said Tobiano.

Three years ago, two branches of the extended Rothschild family settled a dispute over the name with the Paris-based investment bank Rothschild & Co., revoking common stock ownership and agreeing not to use the name alone in any business trademark.

Last year, Sergey Bogdanchikov, the former head of Russia’s Rosneft, accused Edmund de Rothschild of engaging in a bribery scheme that stole millions of dollars from his investment fund and ultimately cost him more than $100 million. The private bank declined to comment on the ongoing case.
