UK Queen Elizabeth II just gave her first ever Easter message, in which she hailed the actions of millions of Brits saving lives by staying at home over Easter, declaring “coronavirus will not overcome us”.

The 93-year-old monarch told the British public how she believed the story of Christ’s resurrection could be a symbol for the world giving “new hope and fresh purpose”.

In her speech to the nation, the Queen said: “Easter will be different for many of us, but by keeping apart we keep others safe.. But Easter isn't cancelled; indeed, we need Easter as much as ever.. The discovery of the risen Christ on the first Easter Day gave his followers new hope and fresh purpose, and we can all take heart from this.. We know that Coronavirus will not overcome us.”

The Queen spoke of how the symbol of light at Easter from lighting candles at church is a symbol of unity as the world suffers the  pandemic which has changed everyday life immeasurably.

She said: “Many religions have festivals which celebrate light overcoming darkness.. Such occasions are often accompanied by the lighting of candles.. They seem to speak to every culture, and appeal to people of all faiths, and of none."

The latest, unprecedented, speech came just few days after the monarch delivered a historic message of hope to the nation and the Commonwealth last Sunday amid the global pandemic.

In her previous message, she said: “I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time,” Elizabeth shared. “A time of disruption in the life of our country; a disruption that has brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all.”

Both televised address were recorded in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle where the Queen and Prince Philip, 98, are self isolating.
