A government news agency said that Qatar's public prosecutor has ordered the arrest of Finance Minister Ali Sharif Al-Emadi for questioning about allegations of abuse of power and misuse of public money.

Al-Emadi is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of QNB, the largest lender bank in the Middle East and Africa.

The arrest was unusual, as allegations of criminal behavior by senior state officials or members of ruling families in the Gulf are usually dealt with behind closed doors.

Police have arrested the Al-Emadi for questioning regarding allegations of embezzlement, abuse of power.

Qatari dollar bonds retained most of their previous gains after the news, with yields on outstanding 2050 securities falling by about 4 basis points to 3.4%, and the exchange had already closed for the weekend.

Al-Emadi was appointed Minister of Finance the day after Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad took over the leadership of the country in June 2013, and has held the position since then. The Qatar News Agency said on Thursday that the public prosecutor had opened an investigation into the case.
