Qatar Crown Prince Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani has fired his finance minister for corruption and "loss of trust", the most senior government executive to be removed in a campaign to root out corruption, Qatar's state officials revealed on Tuesday.

Recently, Qatar's finance minister Ali Shareef El-Emadi has been arrested over allegations of abuse of power and misuse of public funds in the wealthy Gulf state, according to the Qatar News Agency.

Also in this regard, the judiciary authorities ordered that the former Minister of Tamim regime be questioned after a review of alleged "crimes related to the civil service", according to the Qatar News Agency.

In the same context, the accused official sits on the board of Qatar's $300bn (£216bn) sovereign wealth fund and is chairman of Qatar National Bank.

Notably, the former official was chief executive of the bank, which is the Middle East's largest lender, before becoming finance minister in 2013. Moreover, El-Emadi was employed as part of a new cabinet of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
