Thousands Protest in Berlin against Newly Proposed COVID-19 Restrictions

Thousands of anti-lookdown people took the streets in Berlin opposing the newly proposed COVID-19 restrictions by the parliament on Wednesday.

At least 150 persons were detained after clashing and attacking the police who gathered near the Reichstag.

The new restrictions include imposing a curfew from 10 pm to 5 am, shutting down all sports venues and spots in the areas that report 100 new infections in every 100,000 residents weekly. Schools will be suspended and students will switch to the e-learning methods in the areas which record more than 165 new infections in every 100,000 residents.

Health Minister Jens Spahn underscored in the voting session: “As hard as it is, as sick of it as we are, reducing contacts helps.”

He added: “We are again seeing 5,000 COVID-19 intensive care patients and rising, with the age of the patients sinking," continuing: “We want to avoid an overburdening of our health system, an overburdening that many of our neighbouring countries have experienced painfully.
