Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa said Saturday that Portugal will ban domestic travel and close schools near two upcoming holidays in an effort to curb the spread of Coronavirus before Christmas.

Inter-municipal travel will be banned from 11 pm on November 27 until 5 am on the second of December. On December 4, it will be from 11:00 pm until 5:00 am and will last until December 9 to prevent movement during public holidays.

Schools will be closed on Monday, before these two holidays, at a time when stores will have to close early. Employers are encouraged to give workers a vacation to limit travel activity.

"We still have a very large number of cases that pose a threat to our health," Costa told a news conference.

He added that masks are now also mandatory in the workplace after they were only compulsory in public and closed commercial places.

Portugal recorded 62 deaths and 6472 cases of Coronavirus on Saturday, most of them in the north of the country, bringing the total number of infections to 255,970 cases, with 3,824 deaths.
