Pope Shenouda III Goes Viral on 10th Death Anniversary

On Thursday, Pope Shenouda III, the 117th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, went viral on the internet on his 10th death anniversary.

He passed away at the age of 88 after suffering from prostate cancer on March 17, 2012.

The prominent religious leader served for four decades as the spiritual leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church, the largest Christian community in the Middle East.

Shenouda was born Nazeer Gayed on August 3, 1923, and raised in a Coptic family in northern Egypt. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1947 from the University of Cairo.

Pope Shenouda III joined the Coptic Orthodox Theological Seminary in his final year of studies. He taught History while studying theology at the Seminary.

The religious leader obtained a bachelor of theology in 1949 and then joined the seminary’s faculty.
